Shopping spree lands couple in jail

A man’s lost credit card became an Oklahoma City couple’s golden ticket for a shopping spree, which included purchases of teddy bears, cigarettes, duffel bags and more.

About 6:55 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to a disturbance at a Motel 6, 1800 E Reno Ave. At the scene, the motel’s manager said there was a man and a woman who had rented a room with a stolen credit card, according to a police report.

The manager told police the man and woman were fleeing the hotel “with a considerable amount of luggage” and headed toward the nearby Greyhound Bus Station. Officers were able to locate Cody and Summer Gibbs, both 34, at the bus station and took them into custody for questioning.

An officer noted that Cody Gibbs was carrying a large camouflage bag and that he consented to a search of the motel room where they had stayed. Inside the room, officers found several Bass Pro Shops shopping bags.

During an interview, Summer Gibbs told police that she and her husband were walking in downtown Oklahoma City when they saw a Chase Bank credit card on the ground in front of the Chesapeake Energy Arena and took it.

Officers combing through Cody Gibbs’ duffel bag noted everything inside appeared to be brand new. When asked how he purchased the items, Cody Gibbs told officers he bought some with cash and the rest “with the card,” according to the police report.

Officers were able to locate receipts for purchases of nearly $1,470 at Bass Pro Shops, about $60 at a gas station and the motel manager provided a receipt for $61.62.

Two teddy bears, duffel bags, six flashlights, jeans, underwear and flip-flops were among the dozens of items purchased, according to police.

The couple’s stories matched closely, which suggested they “were willing participants in these crimes and conspired together to fraudulently use the found credit card,” an officer noted in the report.

During an interview with the victim, he told police he had been in Bricktown with his daughter earlier that afternoon and that he had been riding an electric scooter. He said he didn’t know the card was missing until he started receiving fraud alert texts on his cellphone.

Cody and Summer Gibbs were arrested on complaints of conspiracy to commit a felony, obtaining property under false pretenses and concealing a lost credit card. They are being held at the Oklahoma County jail in lieu of $12,000 bail, each.
