Midwest City’s Colbert using wins to prove doubters wrong
Midwest City quarterback Preston Colbert is not mad at those who doubted him leading up to the season. That would be petty.
“I just feel like I’ve been playing with my brothers and my teammates just to go out there and win as many games as we can,” Colbert said. “That’s the only thing on my mind.
“By doing that, I’ll be able to prove the haters wrong.”
Following a breakout junior year in which he led the Bombers to the Class 6A-II state semifinals, Colbert took notice anytime someone doubted he could replicate that season.
Now Colbert and the Bombers await a rematch with No. 2 Bixby in Friday’s Class 6A-II state semifinal at Jenks High School.
Colbert has accounted for six or more touchdowns in three of the past four games.
In last week’s 56-35 win over Sapulpa, he took it up a notch. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 328 yards and five TDs, and he rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns.
Colbert is The Oklahoman’s staff pick for Player of the Week.
“There’s only one stat we’re looking for and that is state championship,” Midwest City coach Darrell Hall said. “He understands that, and he wants to accumulate all the can to get us there.”
Colbert’s junior season was remarkable but mired by a semifinal loss to Bixby.
Colbert completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,242 yards, 36 TDs and just four interceptions.
With all new receivers this season, he’s completed 55 percent for 2,225 yards, 29 TDs and four interceptions in two less games.
A minor knee injury cost a nondistrict game and limited his running ability. It was Week 7 when he looked completely healthy in a rout of rival Del
City.
From there, he’s only gotten better. So have the Bombers.
“I know what I’m capable of,” Colbert said. “I’ve shown that.
“Hopefully I can get that revenge that I’ve been praying and hoping for since about this time last year. It will feel good to get that win on my belt.”
