Navy’s triple option will test Tulsa’s defense
TULSA — Two games remain in a disappointing University of Tulsa season, and the team sees two more chances to pick up additional wins.
"We still have an opportunity to play two college football games, and that's not an opportunity I take lightly," senior tight end Cole Neph said. "I think a lot of the guys on the team have the same mentality.
"They want to play for pride and for the guys standing next to them and for our town and everything. Going out and playing with high energy and high competitiveness in the last two games is a big deal."
The Golden Hurricane plays its final road game Saturday afternoon at Navy, a team that also is 2-8 with a 1-5 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
"We've got two games left and we definitely want to finish this up on the right note, and a big win at Navy would be a really good win for us," coach Philip Montgomery said. "I know it's going to be tough to do, but I know our guys will be
locked in and focused to do that."
The Midshipmen, who have prevailed in all three conference meetings, are a tricky opponent because of their triple option, and they can burn clock with lengthy drives that keep the other team's offense off the field.
"Trying to prepare for their offense in a matter of a week is very difficult, so we know we've got our hands full," Montgomery said. "We've got to play very disciplined football, especially on the defensive side. We've got to tackle well.
"Offensively, you know you're going to have to be efficient and take care of the football, go get points when you have opportunities because you're going to have limited amount of plays, limited amount of drives. You've got to make the most of them."
