Ehlinger’s shoulder ‘angry’

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger suffered a “reaggravation” of a shoulder injury, UT coach Tom Herman said Monday on the Big 12 coaches teleconference. But Herman hopes Ehlinger is able to throw Tuesday and play Friday at Kansas.

Ehlinger was injured late in the second quarter against Iowa State on Saturday. Backup quarterback Shane Buechele came on and finished off a 24-10 victory over the Cyclones.

Both QBs played well. Ehlinger completed 12 of 15 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. Buechele completed 10 of 10 for 89 yards and a TD.

“The MRI just showed a reaggravation, is the best way to put it,” Herman said. “No broken bones, no separation. No ridiculous amount of damage. But it’s angry. It’s upset. The joint, the shoulder, is inflamed. So he won’t throw today, and our hope is to have him throwing by tomorrow.”

Patterson plans to coach

TCU coach Gary Patterson had a twitter message for certain coaches after the Horned Frogs beat Baylor last Saturday.

“Thanks to all the Frog family out there who watched or joined us in Waco thank you! The guys played hard! To all the recruiters out there who are saying I am retiring after Oklahoma State (on Saturday) so our commits would visit you, you aren’t that lucky! Lol Go Frogs!”

Patterson said Monday on the Big 12 coaches teleconference that high school coaches told him what was being said on the recruiting trail.

“You know me, I always like to stir it up,” Patterson said. “I had a couple of high school coaches tell me that was being said. If it’s an assistant coach saying it, it’s one thing. If it’s a head coach saying it, it’s another thing. No big deal, I just wanted them to know I knew.”

Patterson is in his 19th season as the TCU coach. He has a record of 165-63.

Tech loses 4 straight

In late October, Texas Tech football was 5-2. Then came three straight, high-scoring, competitive losses — 40-31 at Iowa State, 51-46 to Oklahoma and 41-34 to Texas — followed by a collapse, a 21-6 loss at Kansas State. Now Tech plays Baylor on Saturday in Arlington in a battle of 5-6 teams seeking bowl eligibility.

“That was an outlier game for us,” coach Kliff Kingsbury said of the K-State game. “Offensively, we were inept. That was an anomaly, really, how we’ve played this year.”

Tech quarterback Jett Duffey, again filling in for injured starter Alan Bowman, has been effective against the likes of OU and Texas but wasn’t in Manhattan, completing 19 of 27 for 150 yards and an interception. Tech’s only points came on field goals.

What are the quarterback plans against Baylor? “That’s a great question,” Kingsbury said. “Still trying to figure it out with Alan. The other two guys (including season-opener starter

Carter McLane) are banged up as well. See where we go this week and try to get a guy out there that can play at a high level.”

Kingsbury even said Tech would have a fourth quarterback, sophomore

Cole Garrett, ready to go just in case.
