Finalists for Jim Thorpe Award announced

Georgia’s DeAndre Baker, Notre Dame’s Julian Love and LSU’s Greedy Williams have been named as finalists for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s best defensive back.

The winner will be announced Dec. 6 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Atlanta. The show will air on ESPN.

A banquet for the winner will be held on Feb. 5, 2019, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Big 12 reprimands Texas’ Hager for remark about OU

Breckyn Hager was publicly reprimanded by the Big 12 on Monday for violating the conference’s sportsmanship and ethical conduct policy after he made a disparaging joke about Oklahoma to a reporter after the Longhorns’ last game.

Conference rules prohibit coaches, student-athletes, athletic department staff and university personnel from making negative comments about other member institutions.

Bowlsby said it was Hager’s second violation of the sportsmanship rules and the player was expected to issue a public apology.

Texas released a statement from Hager, a senior and Austin, Texas, native. He said meant the comment to be “lighthearted” and that he has the “utmost respect” for Oklahoma and its football program.

Michigan mum on star DE Winovich’s status

Harbaugh declined to say Monday if he expects star defensive end Chase Winovich to play at No. 10 Ohio State on Saturday.

Winovich appeared to hurt his left shoulder Saturday against Indiana. He left the game in the third quarter and did not return. Harbaugh said Winovich will be evaluated every day, but gave no indication whether he will be on the field for the fourth-ranked Wolverines. Winovich posted on his Instagram account Sunday night, saying “To those who celebrated what they thought would be my demise, I’ll be back.”

Winovich was named an AP midseason All-American and is a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, which recognizes the nation’s top defensive player. FROM STAFF AND
