For the 40th anniversary of “Superman: The Movie,” viewers are getting the chance again to experience the film in theaters.

Forty years ago, moviegoers believed a man could fly.

Behind then-state-ofthe-art special effects and the compelling performance of Christopher Reeve, moviegoing audiences of the 1970s were introduced to a new Superman in “Superman: The Movie,” arguably the granddaddy of the modern superhero blockbuster film.

The Richard Donner-directed film made $300 million worldwide after its December 1978 release, was nominated for three Oscars and spawned three sequels.

Now, for the film’s 40th anniversary, Fathom Events is giving viewers the chance again to experience the film in theaters.

In Oklahoma City, the film will show at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday and Tuesday at Tinseltown USA, 6001 N M.L.K. Ave.; at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday, and 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at AMC Quail Springs 24, 2501 W Memorial. Fathom Events notes more theaters could be added for the Dec. 3 showing.

Set to a rousing score by John Williams, “Superman” features Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Glenn Ford, Terence Stamp, Margot Kidder and Jackie Cooper among its all-star cast.

The Fathom Events screenings will be preceded by showings of the 1941 Max Fleischer Superman animated short “The Mechanical Monsters.”

Want to read up on the film’s influence before checking out the rerelease? “Back Issue” Magazine #109, on sale at comic book shops now, is a special issue focused on “Superman: The Movie.”

The magazine looks at comics and collectibles surrounding the film, and has interviews with several people involved with the film, including executive producer Ilya Salkind, Jack O’Halloran (Non), Aaron Smolinski (baby Clark), Jeff East (Young Clark) and Diane Sherry Case (Teen Lana Lang).

The magazine also delves into the Superman novels by Elliot S. Maggin and Cary Bates’ plans for the unproduced “Superman V” film.

Ten percent of the proceeds from this issue’s comic shop orders will be donated to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, according to publisher TwoMorrows.
