Brooks makes Sooners’ running game go

- Ryan Aber raber@ oklahoman.com

When Oklahoma and Texas played in early October, the Sooners’ running back position wasn’t nearly as powerful as it has been lately.

Through the first six games,

Oklahoma averaged 208.8 yards on the ground and were helped greatly by 316 rushing yards in the season opener against Florida Atlantic.

Over the six games after the loss to the Longhorns, the Sooners have averaged 320.8 yards per game on the ground.

A big part of the uptick has been the emergence of redshirt freshman Kennedy Brooks as well as the solidification of the offensive line.

“Lot like Rodney (Anderson) last year, right? Lot of parallels,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said of Brooks. “The moments have never been too big for him. He’s always been a good enough player, and he’s just one of those guys that’s taken advantage of opportunities.

“The things that guy sees, I can’t sit up here and describe it to you, because it wouldn’t make sense. He sees the games differently than most backs do and then has some nice physical skills to go along with it.”

Murray earns weekly honors

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week after his performance against West Virginia.

In last week’s 59-56 win over the Mountaineers, Murray threw for 364 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 114 yards and a touchdown.

For his performance, he also earned his fifth Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award, tying Texas’ Ricky Williams for the most in one season.

He became the only player in FBS history to average 300 or more passing yards and 60 or more rushing yards in the regular season.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football — considering integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity — who is from Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played either junior college or Division I football in Texas.

In the Big 12, Murray was joined by kicker AustinSeibert as Special Teams Player of the Week and Brooks was the Newcomer of the Week.
