Could Big 12 title game be JerryWorld warm-up?

Number of Big 12 Championship game tickets allocated to both participating schools. It’s approximately half the number of tickets OU would be given for a bowl game.

The Big 12, in conversations with the Dallas Cowboys, agreed to sell 10,000 standing-room only tickets. Max capacity, including standing room, should not exceed 74,000. Approximately the number of tickets both OU and Texas are allotted for the Red River Rivalry. Number of ticket requests OU received for Saturday’s game.

The Red River Rivalry and the Cotton Bowl stand on hallowed ground.

Oklahoma and Texas have played there every year since 1929, and in major-college football, no rivalry matches that 90-year run.

Not Georgia-Florida. Not Army-Navy.

But as the Cotton Bowl ages, some wonder if the OU-Texas match-up in the Big 12 title game is a test drive for an eventual move to AT&T Stadium.

JerryWorld is the bright, shiny, (relatively) new palace of the Dallas Cowboys. It has all the bells and whistles of a modern stadium, including a massive high-definition screen suspended above the field. It will make the Cotton Bowl’s age spots and wrinkles — overflowing toilets are common — look all the worse.

Still, when it comes to the Red River Rivalry, the Cotton Bowl has something no other place can match — history.

The traditions around the rivalry are strongly tied to the Cotton Bowl, which has a contract with OU and Texas that runs through 2025.

“I don’t know how you take it out of the Cotton Bowl,” Sooner coach Lincoln Riley said earlier this week.

“I don’t know how you do it. … That game is too historic, that venue is too historic.”
