Cal coach gets new five-year contract
California coach Justin Wilcox has signed a new five-year deal to stay under contract with the school through the 2023 season.
The deal signed Thursday adds two more years to the original contract signed in 2017. Wilcox also gets a raise and more money for his assistant coach pool.
Wilcox went 7-5 in his second season at Cal and is taking the Golden Bears to the Cheez-It Bowl later this month. He has a 12-12 record at Cal.
Targeting penalties do not rise in 2018
The NCAA says the number of enforced targeting penalties in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season was the same as in 2017, ending four straight years of increased calls.
NCAA national coordinator of officials Rogers Redding reported 179 enforced calls in 817 games compared with 179 in 816 games last season.
The final 2017 report originally listed
188 enforced calls, but Redding said the numbers are sometimes adjusted after an offseason review. The NCAA compiles its numbers through reports submitted each week by conferences.
Maryland introduces new football coach
Mike Locksley is thrilled to be home. The Washington native who spent two stints as a Maryland football assistant and also served as the Terrapins' interim leader for six games in 2015 was introduced Thursday as the school's full-time coach.
Locksley, who turns 49 on Christmas Day, will remain with the top-ranked Crimson Tide through the College Football Playoff.
Georgia Tech interviews Temple coach
Temple coach Geoff Collins has met with Georgia Tech officials about the Yellow Jackets' vacant head-coaching position.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Georgia Tech was not releasing information about its search to replace Paul Johnson, who is stepping down after 11 seasons as coach of the Yellow Jackets.
The person said Collins met with Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury in New York earlier this week and with the university president in Atlanta on Thursday morning.
The person said as of Thursday evening Collins had not been offered the job by Georgia Tech.
