Running back Jahmyl Jeter getting more involved in practice
STILLWATER — As a redshirting freshman and scout-team player, Jahmyl Jeter spent most of the year watching Oklahoma State’s four-headed running back monster do its work.
But with Justice Hill deciding to leave early for the NFL, and J.D. King transferring, Jeter has ascended the depth chart to the point that he’s getting some work with the third-team offense during bowl practices.
“He went the wrong way most of the time,” OSU coach Mike Gundy joked after Tuesday evening’s practice. “We put him in there with the threes, and let him run in there, and they tackled him a bunch, and he realized that he wasn’t redshirting anymore.
“He’s in there getting some quality work.”
At 6-feet and 210 pounds, Jeter is more of a power back than Chuba Hubbard or LD Brown.
Jeter was on the travel squad for several of the Cowboys’ road games this season.
With only three scholarship running backs on the roster now, OSU is looking to add to the depth of the position. That includes a recent scholarship offer extended to Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College running back Dezmon Jackson.
Quotable
Gundy reminisced this week about the Big Eight and the previous version of the Big 12 Conference as his team prepares to face former conference opponent Missouri in the Liberty Bowl at 2:45 p.m. Dec. 31:
“I’m excited about playing them, because I’m an old Big Eight guy. You know, back in the day, we played them and I still think one of the tragedies that we’ve ever had around here is we lost the old Big 12, when we had 12 teams. It was pretty cool. We had the North and South (divisions). So we get to play them, and they’re a really good team.”
Extra points
•Gundy got back out on the road to recruit on Thursday morning, using the helicopter that became his popular form of travel last year at this time. Among his stops was a visit to see defensive end LaRon Stokes of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
•Missouri revealed its uniforms for the Liberty Bowl, with white helmets and jerseys, and gold pants. That means OSU will be in dark jerseys, but as usual, it isn’t likely that the uniform combination will be revealed before game day.
•Another day, and another school named in connection with OSU offensive coordinator Mike
Yurcich. Reports out of Tennessee have mentioned Yurcich’s name in the mix for the Volunteers’ vacant offensive coordinator position.
