Beau Teel came in just shy of 10,000 career yards entering Sperry’s championship game against Beggs on Thursday.

The four-year starter at quarterback would be starting his 50th game as the signal caller for the Pirates, a career that began his first game his freshman season.

But none of that was on Teel’s mind as he took the field against Beggs last Thursday night.

“It’s cool that we have a chance to do something that hasn’t been done around here,” Teel said. “Put the first gold ball in the trophy case.”

Teel would end up getting to do both, as he accounted for 168 total yards and two touchdowns in the Class 2A title game as Sperry defeated Beggs 35-14.

Teel reached the mark of 10,000 and brought home the gold ball, for his performance, he is The Oklahoman’s Player of the Week after the final games of the 2018 season.

Asked how he felt capping his career with a state title, the senior quarterback said he was shocked.

“I couldn’t believe what was happening,” he said. “Honestly it was a great experience,”

Perry wins its own tournament for first time

Perry wrestling is as

storied of a program as there is in Oklahoma high school athletics.

But on Saturday, the Class 3A Maroons added a surprising first to the trophy case — a championship on its own turf.

Perry won the Perry Tournament of Champions, its first in the tournament’s 43-year history, scoring 235 team points to best defending Class 6A champion Choctaw by 81 points.

“This is special,” Perry coach Ronnie Delk said. “It truly hasn’t sunk in yet of what we did, but it will.”

The Maroons put five guys through to the finals with four coming out on top as individual champs.

Gabe Valencia won at 106 pounds, Ryan Smith won by decision at 113, Dylan Avery won by decision at 132 and

Hadyn Redus won by decision at 152.

With nine returning state qualifiers and four returning state champions, Perry will look to win its third straight team championship and make a run at its 11th consecutive dual state title this season.
