State publishes free parks and outdoor guide

The 2019 Oklahoma State Parks & Outdoor Guide will be available free beginning Tuesday. The guide is produced by the state Tourism and Recreation Department to help people plan an Oklahoma outdoor vacation.

The book’s more than 200 pages contains informatio­n on each state park and on places where travelers can find outdoor activities like golf, rock climbing and zip lining. Also included are directorie­s dedicated to activities, camping and cabins/lodging within the state.

Other free guides available from the Tourism and Recreation Department include the 2019 Oklahoma Travel Guide, Discover Oklahoma Destinatio­n Dining Guide, Oklahoma Route 66 Guide and Long Road to Liberty, a guide to Oklahoma’s black history and culture.

Eagle watching events begin in January

Several winter eagle watching events are scheduled in Oklahoma, beginning with the Arcadia Lake Eagle Watch from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 4-6. Participan­ts should start at the park office, 9000 E Second St. The cost is $3 per vehicle. For more informatio­n, call 405-216-7471.Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge near Jet will offer eagle watching from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 4 and 5 and again Jan. 11 and 12. Refuge staff will lead watchers to an area to view eagles as they come in to roost for the night. Space is limited to 20 participan­ts each session. To reserve space, call 580-626-4794.

Lake Thunderbir­d State Park in Norman will host the first of six eagle watch sessions Jan. 5. Additional sessions will be every other Saturday through March 16. They begin at 1 p.m. at the Discovery Cove Nature Center, 1201 Clear Bay Ave. Space is limited to 30 people per session, so reservatio­ns are required by calling 405-321-4633.
