Family gets a Habitat home for the holidays
Another Oklahoma family is celebrating the holidays in their own home, thanks to the generosity of retired business owners Gary and Diane Rumsey.
The Rumseys donated $90,000 to Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity to underwrite the full construction costs of the new dwelling.
Along with their donation, for the past four months they personally helped build the home on SW 148, assisted by family and friends.
The recipients of the Rumseys’ philanthropy are the Trejo family, which includes parents Ruben and Trinidad and their three children, one of whom has special needs. The Trejo family worked alongside the Rumseys and other volunteers to fulfill their 300 hours of required “sweat equity” during construction.
“I loved visiting with the family during the colors and styles selection process,” Diane Rumsey said. “We also loved the framing day process! Everyone working together to create a beautiful home for this family made it very special.”
The Trejos’ new brick home has 1,509 square feet, with four bedrooms, an attached two-car garage, security alarm system and eightperson storm shelter.
The home features geothermal vinyl double-pane windows, foam insulation in the walls and under the roof, and Class 4 impactresistant composition shingles. The features in these homes typically save families as much as a third on their utility bills and homeowners’ insurance. Central Oklahoma Habitat is one of the most energyefficient builders in the state.
“We are so grateful to have wonderful supporters like the Rumseys who really care about making a difference on a local level,” said Ann Felton Gilliland, Central Oklahoma Habitat chairman and CEO. “This is not just a monetary donation we’re talking about in this case. The Rumseys and their friends came out rain and shine to help build this home for a deserving, hard-working family. We can’t thank them enough for their financial gift and for supporting our mission to help Oklahoma’s limited-income families achieve safe, stable housing.”
