Sooners, Cowboys lose league openers
Oklahoma kept it close late at Kansas before losing 70-63 to the Jayhawks. In Stillwater, Iowa State rallied from a one-point halftime deficit for a 69-63 win over Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma stormed back with a furious rally in the fourth quarter to overcome a 14-point deficit and defeat Texas Tech, 66-61, Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center.
The Sooners (5-7) were behind for most of the game as the Red Raiders (9-3) led 31-22 at halftime and 46-39 after three quarters.
The Sooners trailed by as many as 14 points early in the fourth quarter. Texas Tech still led by eight, 52-44, with 7:17 remaining in the game.
Oklahoma then outscored the Red Raiders 20-3 over the next few minutes to build a ninepoint lead, the largest of the game for the Sooners.
The Sooners took the lead for good with just over four minutes remaining when Oklahoma forced a turnover and Shaina Pennington converted a fast-break layup at the other end for a 56-55 advantage. It was part of a 13-0 run by the Sooners, who built their lead to 64-55 late in the game.
Pennington scored 18 points to lead Oklahoma, shooting 8 of 16 from the field. Her backcourt teammate, Taylor Robertson, added 17 points.
Ana Llanusa, making her season debut after being sidelined during the Sooners’ non-conference schedule with a foot injury, added 11 points.
Forward Madi Williams was the Sooners’ fourth player in double figures with 10 points. She also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Oklahoma outscored Texas Tech 27-15 in the fourth period, the only quarter the Sooners outscored the Red Raiders.
Oklahoma’s next game is at Kansas State on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
