The Oklahoman

Group is out to restore, respect NE 23

- Richard Mize rmize@ oklahoman.com

Business owners, property owners and others along NE 23 are putting together the NE 23rd Street Commercial District, but with something deeper than mere commerce in mind. Not just business. “Ethical, place-based community development.”

“A catalyst for economic prosperity and preserver of cultural traditions.”

“Restore NEOKC (northeast Oklahoma City) economic activity while preserving and energizing the historically vibrant culture.” Restore, and respect. Interested? The next meeting is 6 p.m. Thursday at Greater New Zion Baptist Church, 1005 NE 28.

Nonprofit Northeast OKC Renaissance Inc. is leading the effort in collaboration with the Oklahoma City Black Chamber of Commerce, the city’s Commercial District Revitalization Program, business leadership consultant Sharron Glover, and NEOKC neighbors and friends.

Count me in. Full disclosure: As pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), 2301 NE 23, founded as the city’s first integrated church in 1960 (probably the state’s first), I have more than a passing interest in this. Godspeed, y’all.

Organizers are following the example of other commercial districts for economic development, place making and creation of destinations, but with more attention to cultural impact and quality of everyday life.

“Unfortunately, the resurgence of local districts such as Deep Deuce has coincided with the decline of its historically Black population, leaving a cultural and economic void for many of Oklahoma City’s forgotten residents,” according to an information flyer. “However, catalysts such as the Northeast Renaissance TIF (tax increment financing district), NE 23rd Street Opportunity Zone, and the Innovation District have sparked new investment in the quadrant’s redevelopment along with interest in revitalizing its historic corridors.

“The stage has been set to fill the void with an authentic and inclusive destination that preserves the rich African American history of NE 23rd street and rekindles its vibrant cultural and economic activity while modeling diversity and inclusion.”

Goal: Collaborate to establish a commercial district along NE 23 by May.

Rationale: A NE 23 commercial district can:

“Unify business and property owners and increase leverage for stronger advocacy for NE 23rd and the broader NE community; make us privy to vital news and information concerning our community; create a pathway to funding for strategic planning, streetscape improvements and staffing for ongoing marketing support drive citywide business to NE 23rd street; and ultimately increase commerce along the corridor and throughout the quadrant.”

Next: Finalize district boundaries. Discuss merchant association structure (officers/bylaws). Consider ways to determine a name for the district.

The stage is set. Coming soon: Action.
