Stitt will look for diversity for OU regent

Gov. Kevin Stitt wants to add diversity to the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, the governor-appointed body that currently has one vacancy.

“There is not an African American at this time on that board and that would be something I would certainly look for,” Stitt said Thursday at the state Capitol.

The university has drawn criticism following two recent racist incidents, including a social media post of a student in blackface.

The Black Student Association and the Legislative Black Caucus have called on OU to seek more multicultural faculty, staff and administrators.

Those same groups also have said diversity is needed on the Board of Regents.

“We need someone who can relate to the issues of the students in that position, and particularly the students of color,” said Sen. George Young, D-Oklahoma City, chairman of the Black Caucus.

The seven members of the Board of Regents serve as the official governing body of the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University.

A vacancy was created last month following the resignation of Clay Bennett, who cited health concerns.

“We've got to find the very best Oklahoman that loves OU, that understands what is happening at OU,” Stitt said. “I would look at business acumen because this person has to advise the president of the university.”

Stitt said he planned to meet with OU President Jim Gallogly later Thursday and would ask his thoughts on the Board of Regents.

Stitt addressed the board vacancy while speaking at the Oklahoma Press Association's legislative forum.

Earlier Thursday, Stitt toured the Department of Public Safety and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol academy.

Stitt also made his first visit to the Highway Patrol wall of honor, which includes the photo of every trooper who died in the line of duty.

“It really brings it home when you see people who have given their lives for the safety of Oklahoma. It was really a moving tribute here,” Stitt said.
