Stillwater closes road-stretch with win against Southmoore
Stillwater coach Michael Davis is ready to head home. And he's even more glad to being do so after a tough conference win. No. 14-ranked Stillwater (15-7) closed a seven-game road stretch Tuesday night with a hard-fought 45-39 victory against No. 11 Southmoore. “We expected a game just like this,” Davis said. “This is just how tough our conference is. You have to fight for every game.” Stillwater was led in scoring by senior guard Dylan Smith. He scored 19 points while also grabbing five rebounds and recording five steals and three assists. Stillwater hounded Southmoore (16-6) the entire second half, limiting the Sabercats' points in the paint and forcing more than a dozen turnovers. Southmoore big man Sam Godwin scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds. “Our kids fought,” Davis said. “It wasn't our best offensive night, but our kids fought and that's what we needed to do to get that W.”
Mustang coach resigns on game day
A middle-of-the-day departure left Mustang High School looking for a new boys basketball coach hours before a game. Mustang coach Tondrell Durham resigned from his position as head coach, telling Mustang athletic director Robert Foreman he was leaving due to personal issues, according to the Yukon Review Newspaper. Assistant coach Josh Davis will take over as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Durham was 18-27 in two seasons at Mustang. The Broncos struggled this season, recording a 5-16 record. Before he became the coach at Mustang, Durham went to 13 state tournaments and won seven championships in 19 years at Bishop McGuinness.
Warrior sparks Putnam West to conference title
MJ Warrior led Putnam West to a conference championship on Tuesday night. Warrior came up with the decisive steal in the final seconds to propel No. 7-ranked Putnam West to an 87-82 win over No. 8 Midwest City for the Big 10 Conference title. “We know how to fight back,” Warrior said. “Coach (Lenny) Bert don't like losing.” Warrior scored 18 points, while Rondel Walker added 25 and Trentez Scales scored 22. Midwest City lead by 13 in the second quarter, but the Patriots fought back quickly to tie the game by the break. Warrior said that was the result of practice scenarios each day. The Patriots always trail. They have to fight their way back. “We do this all of the time,” Warrior said.
