Second woman arrested in fatal drug deal

- Staff reports Brooks

Two women have been arrested in connection to the Sunday night shooting death of a man who was allegedly trying to buy a kilo of methamphetamine.

Matt Bowens, 39, died at St. Anthony Hospital after earlier being shot at a northwest Oklahoma City apartment complex.

Officers went to the complex where they found a magazine to a handgun, a large amount of cash and a set of digital scales near where shots were heard about an hour before Bowens died, according to a court affidavit.

Investigators interviewed a witness to the shooting, Erika Schwengels, 29, who said she and Bowens had come to Oklahoma City from Missouri and rented a room at a hotel about 3 miles away from the apartment complex. Bowens met a woman staying in another room at the hotel and later arranged to purchase a “kilo of ice” with her help.

Schwengels told investigators she and Bowens checked out of the hotel and she drove Bowens and the woman to the apartment complex to buy the methamphetamine. After parking the vehicle, Bowens and the woman left the vehicle and a few minutes later, Schwengels said she heard 5 to 7 gunshots and saw Bowens running back to the vehicle, saying he was shot, according to the affidavit.

Schwengels said she drove Bowens to the hospital, where he died. Investigators identified the woman who rented the other room as Kristen Brenee Brooks, 33, of Moore. Schwengels was shown a photo of Brooks by investigators and confirmed she was the woman who arranged the drug sale.

Schwengels was arrested Monday and Brooks arrested on Tuesday. Both women are being held without bail at the Oklahoma County jail on murder complaints.
