MOUNTAINEERS TROUNCE COWGIRLS

- Staff Reports Staff reports

West Virginia cruised past Oklahoma State 77-54 Wednesday in Stillwater, handing the Cowgirls their fourth straight loss

STILLWATER — Down by double-digits before the first quarter ended, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls fell into one of the traps that has haunted them all season.

Another slow start crippled the Cowgirls in a 77-54 loss to West Virginia Wednesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

OSU (13-12, 4-10 Big 12) fell behind 13- 3 late in the first quarter and trailed 40-25 at the half.

Naomi Davenport and Ty nice Martin led West Virginia (19-6, 10-4) with 24 and 22 points, respectively, while the Cowgirls had only one player — Vivian Gray with 23 — score in double-figures.

And Gray had to work hard to get that against West Virginia' s stifling defense. The sophomore was 8-of-24 from the field. No other OSU player made more than three field goals.

“It gets to be a grind when shots aren' t going in, and things aren't going your way,” OSU coach Jim Littell said. “We've got to continue to fight and do the right things. I just had a vision of us playing a lot better than what we did today. I'm disappointed in the way we played.

“Defense travels. Defense allows you to win on the road. West Virginia continues to defend every night, and that's what allows them to be near the top of the conference.”
