Upset of Arizona State highlights trip

- By Scott Wright

Oklahoma State's weekend in Palm Springs, California, didn't finish as strong as it began, but it was a productive and positive trip.

The Cowgirls opened with a 2-0 upset of No. 13 Arizona State, and added wins over North Carolina and San Diego State. The Cowgirls closed out their appearance at the Mary Nutter Classic with losses to No. 14 Arizona and Colorado State when the Cowgirl bats were quiet.

Here's a look at three thoughts on last weekend and the upcoming one:

Eight RBIs and a record

From her usual spot in the middle of the Cowgirl lineup, Madi Sue

Montgomery went wild in a 15-5 run-rule victory over San Diego State on Saturday, finishing with eight runs batted in and becoming the school's all-time RBI leader.

Montgomery drove in three runs with a double in a five-run second inning. She followed that up with a two-run homer in the fourth and a threerun homer in the fifth.

The eight-RBI game tied Kristin Reasnor and

Julie Ward for the most in a game by a Cowgirl, while surpassing Tiffany

Mikkelson for OSU's career record. Montgomery, only a junior, now has 171 career RBI.

Montgomery is batting a team-best .326, having started all 15 games, with three home runs and 15 RBI.

More big bats

No. 20-ranked OSU got an RBI single and a solo home run from Michaela

Richbourg, backing up a five-hit shutout by pitcher Samantha Show to knock off Arizona State on Friday.

Show did her work at the plate in the second game, hitting a pair of solo home runs and a two-run double in the 7-5 win over North Carolina.

Show's status as a legit two-way threat has been on display. She's batting .320 with five home runs and 14 RBI, while compiling a 3-2 record, a 2.93 earned-run average with four complete games as pitcher. Opponents are batting .176 against her.

Staying home

After early season trips to Texas, Florida and California, OSU will be in the friendly confines of Cowgirl Stadium for the OSU/Tulsa Invitational.

OSU will face Seattle and Syracuse on Friday, McNeese State and Northern Iowa on Saturday, then Northern Iowa again in the Sunday finale.

OSU is 10-5 to start the season, its best start through 15 games since 2014.
