Replacing Seibert at front of special teams concerns
NORMAN — Kicker and punter have been a solidified position at Oklahoma for the last four years.
From the time Austin Seibert arrived on campus, he handled both roles and set an NCAA scoring record for kickers in the process.
But now, Seibert is gone and the Sooners have plenty to replace on special teams.
The Sooners begin spring practice Thursday and until then, The Oklahoman will preview each position group, taking a look at special teamers in Monday's edition. Player lost: Austin Seibert
Players returning: Gabe Brkic, RFr.; Kasey Kelleher, RSo.; Connor McGinnis, Sr.; Reeves Mundschau, RSo.; Calum Sutherland, RSo.
Newcomers: None
THREE STORYLINES TO WATCH Replacing Seibert, Part I
Over his four years as the starter, Austin Seibert benefited as much as anyone from Oklahoma's recordbreaking offense, with 499 career points.
Seibert wasn't overwhelming as a placekicker — he attempted just three kicks of 50 or more yards during his career — but he was more than solid. He hit 162 consecutive extra points, setting a school record.
The likely replacement for Seibert is redshirt freshman Gabe Brkic, who made his lone extra-point try last season and kicked three of his four kickoffs for touchbacks.
Replacing Seibert, Part II
Seibert's punting numbers weren't overwhelming — he averaged 41.7 yards over his career — but his ability to direct kicks helped the Sooners to the top 10 last year in punt return defense.
When Reeves Mundschau arrived in Norman, it was thought he might push Seibert to a more specialized role. But Seibert held on to the punting duties as Mundschau has spent the last two seasons waiting in the wings.
Mundschau was one of the top punters coming out of high school, averaging 38 yards as a senior with a long of 62. He's likely to take over the role next season.
Return game
Outside of Seibert, the Sooners return plenty when it comes to special teams.
CeeDee Lamb is back after handling almost all of Oklahoma's punt returns last season — averaging 12.8 yards. Tre Brown, who averaged 23.7 yards on 30 kick returns last season, is back as well.
The Sooners also return holder Connor McGinnis and snapper Kasey Kelleher.
