Edmond native Kolby Kindle returns to Oklahoma with `Waitress'

Kolby Kindle mostly stays on the road, so he's always ecstatic when it winds back to his home state.

“It's the best feeling in the world. ... It just feels like everything comes full circle,” he said by phone from Miami, Florida.

The Edmond native is returning to the Civic Center on the U.S. tour of “Waitress,” playing Oklahoma City Tuesday through March 24. Inspired by the late Adrienne Shelly's 2007 film about a pregnant server and pie-maker dreaming of a way out of her loveless marriage, the hit show was brought to the stage by a rare all-female creative team, with music and lyrics by Grammynomi­nated pop star Sara Bareilles, book by Jessie Nelson, choreograp­hy by Lorin Latarro and direction by Tony winner Diane Paulus.

“It's great to be on a show that's still running on Broadway and doing very well,” Kindle said. “With the story being so femaledriv­en, it's nice to just hear a woman's perspectiv­e and be under their leadership. ... It's needed in this business.”

The Edmond North High School graduate joined the “Waitress” tour in November after two and a half years traveling with “The Book of Mormon.” He previously hit the road with Disney's “Beauty and

the Beast,” “Dreamgirls” and “Sister Act.”

It's especially satisfying when the road turns back to where he started out training with Lyric Theatre's Thelma Gaylord Academy, acting in high school plays and doing musicals at church.

“Being able to come back and share that and let everyone know, `This musical seed you've sown, look what happened,' it's very refreshing,” he said.
