More accurate abortion description necessary

-

“Judge upholds ban on abortion procedure” (News, July 13) described dismemberment abortions as follows: “In the procedure, suction is used to empty the contents of the uterus, followed by the use of forceps to remove uterine contents, and then more suction until the uterus is emptied.” Former Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, though a supporter of legal abortion, nonetheless accurately described dismemberment abortions: “The fetus, in many cases, dies just as a human adult or child would: It bleeds to death as it is torn apart limb by limb. The fetus can be alive at the beginning of the dismemberment process and can survive for a time while its limbs are being torn off.”

When issues are in dispute, it's essential to clearly identify the point in contention. Maybe The Oklahoman believes a family newspaper shouldn't use descriptions such as Justice Kennedy's. But then, neither would a family newspaper want to condone the dismembering of the family's youngest members.

Honest, objective reporting is indispensable to understanding controversies. Euphemistic phrases such as “remove uterine contents” are a grave injustice to the 100,000 living unborn babies who bleed to death each year during this heinous second-trimester “procedure.”

Dismemberment abortion is killing in the most atrocious and cold-blooded manner imaginable. Great credit is due Judge Cindy Truong for her humane ruling.
