Heritage Hall's Matthews brings home gold
Daphne Matthews didn't panic when she was in last place after the first 400 meters.
The junior track star at Heritage Hall was trailing seven other runners in the 800-meter race during the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympics Track& Field Championships in Sacramento, California, on Saturday. One by one, she started to pass the others, even as some tried to block her.
Matthews raced to a gold medal against some of the nation' s best, finishing in 2 minutes, 11.91 seconds in
the 15-16 age group. She set a Class 4A state meet record in May during the 800-meter race, breaking the mark she set a year before as a freshman.
By making it to the 800meter final, she earned All-America status.
Three other Oklahoma athletes earned AllAmerica honors, as well. Jen ks' Hudson Mazzei finished third in the men's 17- 18 1,500meter run, Kiefer's Zoie Kid dy finished third in the women' s 17-18
1,500- meter run and Enid's Ruben Sandoval Daniels finished sixth in the men's 17-18 3,000meter run.
Edmond Santa Fe's Chartier commits to play beach volleyball at Boise State
Edmond Santa Fe volleyball stand out Rori Chartier's success on the sand earned her a college scholarship.
Char tier announced her commitment to Boise State beach volleyball on Thursday night on her Twitter account.
Chartier has been an instrumental piece for a Wolves' squad that has won consecutive titles.
Heading into her senior season, she will become a leader on a team that needs to replace a plethora of talent, including The Oklahoman's 2018 All - City Player of t he Year, Kaeli Robinson.
Char tier joins Deer Creek's Teagan Polcovich as players in the 2020 class to commit to play beach volleyball in college. Polcovich is heading to Missouri State.
The duo recently competed together in the USA National Beach Tour Junior Championships in Manhattan Beach, California, where they made it to the Silver Championship out of 64 teams.
