The Oklahoman

Not your grandfather's Republican Party

-

It appears we live in topsyturvy, upside down times. It's important to pay attention. Republicans, who once despised debt and deficits, put $1.5 trillion tax cut on the national credit card and gave 84% of it to a few of their wealthiest friends. The CBO now projects our annual budget deficit will explode to over $1 trillion this year.

Republicans were once obsessed with election security. We know that Russia targeted our 2016 elections with massive systematic disinformation campaigns. They tried hacking all 50 state election systems. But Republicans are unwilling to consider a single election security bill — even those coauthored by Republicans.

Evangelicals once believed a president's character was crucial but they now accept Donald Trump's lies and racially insensitive statements as “normal.”

American farmers were dedicated to their work and selling the fruits of their labors around the world. Now they seem satisfied with accepting government handouts generated by the tariffs all Americans pay for Trump's counterproductive trade wars.

In 2018, Republicans told us, “We will protect coverage for pre-existing conditions.” But simultaneously Trump and 20 Republican states were already suing to abolish the ACA and its protections. If the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals concurs, 21 million Americans would lose their insurance and 133 million would lose protections for pre-existing conditions. Pay attention folks. This ain't your granddad's Republican Party!
