OKARCHE BASKETBALL COACH DIES

Ray West, who led Okarche to the state tournament 11 times in the last 25 years, died Saturday night at age 68

Long time Ok arc he boys basketball coach Ray West didn't give up on the court, even when the odds were against his teams.

In 45 years of coaching, that was his trademark.

He kept his cancer diagnosis earlier this summer a secret, even as he took a turn for the worse last week. There was no quitting until the end.

West died Saturday night at age 68. Funeral services are pending.

“He was dead- set on beating it,” West's son Aaron said. “He was still fighting just like you would in the fourth quarter or overtime.”

West spent the past 25 years at Okarche High School, where he led the Warriors to the state tour nament 11

times. Last season, he led Okarche to the tournament for the first time since 2012, and he did it with Aaron as his assistant.

West also coached at Fort Supply, Gould, Purcell, Mustang, Mountain View and Cordell. He was the state's active wins leader in boys basketball with 853 career victories.

Fall Sports Media Day set for Aug. 14

The Oklahoma n' s annual Fall Sports Media Day is set for Wednesday at Bishop McGuinness High School.

The event will be held in the lobby of the gymnasium, beginning at 3:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30. The school is located at 801 Northwest 50th Street in Oklahoma City. Visitors are asked to enter from the Interstate 44 service road off Western Avenue.

Each Oklahoma City-area high school participat­ing in football, fall baseball, volleyball, cross country and fast pitch softball is encouraged to bring athletes to meet The Oklahoma n' s high school coverage team for interviews and photos that will be used throughout the upcoming season.

Late Saturday: Reno beats OKC 6-1

Domingo Leyba homered and had three hits as the Reno Aces topped the Oklahoma City Dodgers 6-1 in the series opener Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Braden Shipley ( 4- 4) got the win with three innings of scoreless relief while Oklahoma City starter Daniel Corcino (8-5) took the loss.

The teams faced off in the second contest of the four-game series on Sunday night.
