The Oklahoman

Three storylines for high school football practice

- Jacob Unruh, staff writer

1. Carl Albert's streak

Wagoner's 11-man staterecord winning streak could last just two years.

Carl Albert is coming.

The Titans have won three straight Class 5A state championships, and they've completed two straight undefeated seasons. They haven't lost since Oct. 6, 2016. That's 36 straight games, only 12 behind Wagoner's mark of 48 set in 2017. Should the Titans reach the state semifinals undefeated, the record belongs to them. And they have the talent to do it with quarterback Ben Harris returning alongside running back Javion Hunt on offense and Rico Windham, Reise Collier and Alphonse Joseph on defense.

2. Pathway to Greatness brings change

The realignment of Oklahoma City Public Schools has tossed some unknown factors into the upcoming season. What changes will it cause for classification at a school like John Marshall that added students from Centennial and Northwest Classen? What will the impact be on schools outside of OKCPS?

The average daily attendance numbers have even been delayed until next month, which puts the next two years of districts on hold until January.

Questions haven't fully been answered, but they will be over the next few months.

3. Ground and pound

This is arguably one of the better years for running backs across the state in recent years, and that means there will be quite a battle for the top spot. McGuinness senior Dominic Richardson is headed to TCU and he's primed for a dynamic season now that his gruesome leg injury as a sophomore is fully behind him.

Tulsa Edison star Sevion Morrison captured the state's attention last year with a five-game stretch never seen before. He's capable of doing that for at least 10 games. Owasso running back Isaiah Jacobs has bulked up and he's ready to steal the spotlight. Even breakout candidates in Hunt, Tulsa Union's AJ Green and Broken Arrow's Maurion Horn could steal the show. And don't forget Stillwater junior Qwontrel Walker. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in power and speed. He led the Pioneers to the Class 6A-II state title game last fall and made The Oklahoman's All-State team.

Other running backs to watch include Seminole's Cameron Gunville, Blanchard's Bryce Madron and Tuttle's Triston Truelove.
