Defending women's champ advances at U.S. Open
No .1- seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan opened defense of her U.S. Open title on Tuesday, emerging with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 victory over 84th-ranked Anna Blinkova of Russia in the first round.
In other women' s results on Day 2, two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza was eliminated by Alison Riske of the U.S. 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, while twotime Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and No. 13 seed Be linda Bencic both won in two sets. No. 4-seeded Simona Halep defeated Nicole Gibbs 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Coco Gauff rallied to win her U.S. Open debut at age 15 by beating Anastasia Potapova 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
On the men' s side, No. 2-seed Rafael Nadal looked dominant in his first-round U.S. Open match, easily defeating Australian John Millman 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Cousins under investigation after alleged threat
Los Angeles Lake rs center DeMarcus Cousins is being investigated by the NBA and Mobile, Ala., police after the mother of his child alleged that he threatened to shoot her in the head last week.
The woman, who lives in Mobile and has not been identified, told police on Friday that Cousins made the threat during a phone conversation and provided a recording of the call. TMZ posted a copy of the recording online, and Mobile police spokeswoman Charlette Solis confirmed it was the same as the recording the woman gave investigators.
NBA spokesman Mike Bass said the NBA is also investigating the allegation.
According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, the league may fine, suspend, or dismiss and ban players who violate the league's domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policies. The harshest punishments are reserved f or repeat offenders. Cousins has had no such violations.
Woods undergoes minor knee surgery
Tiger Woods said Tuesday on Twitter he had arthroscopic surgery last week to repair what he described as minor cartilage damage. In a statement Woods released on social media, Dr. Vern Cooley said he looked at the rest of the knee and found no additional problems.
“I'm walking now and hope to resume practice in the next few weeks,” Woods said, adding that he looked forward to traveling to Japan in October for a planned Skins Game exhibition and the ZoZo Championship on Oct. 24-27.
IUPUI basketball coach resigns after DUI arrest
I UPUI men's basketball coach Jason Gardner has resigned following his arrest on drunken driving charges in suburban Hamilton County, Indiana.
Gardner was lodged in the Hamilton County Jail over the weekend and released early Tuesday on his own recognizance. He was arrested early Sunday police after being found asleep behind the wheel at an intersection.
Gardner was entering his sixth season at IUPUI's head coach and has a 64-93 career record.
