Jones' run game too much for Henryetta,

- By Cameron Jourdan Staff writer cjourdan@oklahoman.com

JONES – Korbin Cox tried to plant, but he just slid.

It's the same thing he made defenders do all night, especially in the first half.

Through a piercing wind and sideways rain, the Jones junior running back torched Henryetta in Class 2A No. 7-ranked Jones' 61-0 win on Thursday. In the first half alone, Cox recorded 15 carries for 208 yards with five touchdowns. He also caught 3 passes for 25 yards.

“He's a blue- collar kid, man,” Jones coach Dave Martin said. “Just tough as nails. He's going to go out there, and whatever job is necessary to win, that's what that boy is going to do. And he does a really, really good job at it.”

Cox's running ability helped Jones get off to an early advantage, and the Longhorns (7-1, 4-1 District 2A-2) didn't look back. He rushed three times in four plays on Jones' opening drive, scoring his first touchdown on a 1-yard carry.

It became a familiar sight to Henryetta defenders, Cox running past them and into the end zone.

Multiple times, Cox would break loose from tacklers at the line of scrimmage and run

free through the secondary. Many times, the only thing that could stop him was the wet grass, but not even that stopped Jones' offense.

“He was special,” Martin said.

In the first half, Jones outgained Henryetta, 350 to minus-2. Sophomore quarterback Carson May threw for 81 yards during the first half as Jones' lead grew to 54-0 in the difficult conditions, and his receivers did a great job of corralling passes.

The Longhorns' defense dominated the line of scrimmage, blocking two punts. Hyram Kaskaskee recovered

the first block in the end zone for a touchdown. The second one set Jones up at the 6, and Cox scored one play later.

Even as others slowed on the sloppy surface, Cox found ways to speed up. In the open field, he used the wet ground to his advantage, shaking defenders down and even making a couple of the officials fall on occasions with his cutbacks and swift moves.

For Cox, he's hoping to continue his strong season with the playoffs nearing. Martin knows what his team can do.

“He's a real difference maker,” Martin said. “And he's only getting better.”
