Matt Ryan questionable to start Sunday

-

Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan returned to practice from a right ankle sprain and is listed as questionable for the Falcons' game against Seattle.

The 2016 NFL MVP was a limited participant in Friday's session. If he is unable to play Sunday at Mercedes- Benz Stadium, Matt Schaub will make his first start since 2015 with Baltimore.

"I'll have a sense for what that looks like tomorrow," coach Dan Quinn said of Ryan's injury. "We pushed it really hard today. We'll see how it responds overnight to find out."

Ryan, who ranks second in the league in yards passing, was on the field for the first time since leaving in the fourth quarter of last week's blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was injured on the Rams' fifth sack and limped off the field after losing a fumble.

The 12-year veteran has not missed a game since 2009, a span of 154 consecutive regular-season and nine postseason starts.

Mahomes officially ruled out against Packers

The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled quarterback Patrick Mahomes out for Sunday night's showdown against the Green Bay Packers because of his dislocated right kneecap.

Mahomes, who hurt his knee last Thursday night in Denver, was a limited participant in practice all week. The Chiefs decided to give the reigning league MVP at least one game off as he recovers from an injury that can sometimes sideline a player for several months.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after Friday's walk-through that Matt Moore would start against Green Bay. Rookie quarterback Kyle Shurmur will serve as the backup.

Jets didn't approve surgery for offensive lineman

New York Jets guard Kelechi Osemele had surgery on his ailing right shoulder Friday despite the team not approving the procedure.

The operation to repair a torn labrum was performed by Dr. Glen Ross in Boston, according to Osemele's agent, Andrew Kessler.

The Jets were made aware of Osemele going forward with his plan to have surgery. But because he was not with the team and the surgery wasn't approved, a person with direct knowledge of the situation said the Jets consider it an "unexcused absence."

Osemele is officially listed by the team as doubtful to play Sunday at Jacksonville. He hasn't taken the field since Week 3.

Browns bench offensive tackle Greg Robinson

Cleveland Browns starting left offensive tackle Greg Robinson says he's been benched ahead of the game with the unbeaten New England Patriots.

Robinson, whose i ns e r - tion into the lineup last season sparked Cleveland's surge in the second half, says he's now a backup.

Browns coach Freddie Kitchens has been considering a shakeup on the line since before the bye week. Kitchens didn't reveal his starting front five as the Browns (2-4) prepare to visit the Patriots (7-0) on Sunday.

It's likely Robinson will be replaced by Justin McCray, who hasn't started an NFL game at left tackle and played there sparingly during his career.
