Hubbard, Johnson settle score with race

- Jacob Unruh, Staff writer

STILLWATER — Two of Oklahoma State's fastest players have yet to settle who is faster. That doesn't mean they haven't tried. Imagine the scenario last summer: Chuba Hubbard and Braydon Johnson lined up for a 40-yard race. It happened and it happened again.

“There's nothing really to debate,” Johnson said Tuesday. But there is.

Two of the Cowboys' fastest players — one a former track star in the running to be college football's top player — tried to settle the debate once and for all. The result? A split decision. Johnson won the first race. Hubbard won the next.

Well, that's according to Johnson.

“I'll just confirm what he said,” said Hubbard, who had previously denied the two raced. “He's fast, he's fast. I'll give him that. He's fast. He's real fast.”

Johnson said the two don't discuss the races much. But he'd be willing to go at it again with Hubbard, even if it was Hubbard's coveted track event, the 100-meter dash.

“We know we're both fast,” Johnson said. “But we're sore a lot. It don't really matter. At the end of the day, it's not that serious. It's not worth pulling a hamstring or anything. It's fun.”

Martin reports mom's improvement

OSU defensive end Brock Martin's mom, Penny, underwent her latest round of chemotherapy this week and left with positive news. Brock said Penny's cancerous tumor markers showed great improvement. Penny has been battling ovarian cancer since August.

“It's all good news,” Brock said.

Brock and Malcolm Rodriguez shaved their heads in honor of Penny to start the season.
