Murray says LSU's Burrow favorite for the Heisman
With a little more than a month from the presentation of the 2019 Heisman Trophy, Kyler Murray
knows who he thinks should win the award as it stands now.
Murray, who won the award last year, shared his thoughts on this season's Heisman race Wednesday, ESPN's Josh Weinfuss
reports.
The former Sooner quarterback said he thinks LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is leading the pack, especially after Oklahoma's 48-41 loss to Kansas State on Oct. 26.
“Our guy ( Jalen Hurts)
kind of took a hit with that loss,” said Murray. “I think right now, if somebody had to win, it'd probably be Joe Burrow.”
Burrow is second in the nation in passing yards with 2,805, and Hurts ranks No. 14 in the same statistic with 2,469 yards on the season. Hurts ranks No. 1 in passing efficiency, though, followed by his former Alabama teammate Tua Tagovailoa.
Burrow is No. 3 in passing efficiency.
Burrow currently leads ESPN's Heisman Watch poll. Ohio State defensive end Chase Young is second in the poll, with Tagovailoa third and Hurts fourth.
Murray, now quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, threw for 4,361 yards and rushed for 1,001 yards in his Heisman Trophy winning season.
The Heisman Trophy will be presented to the best players in college football on Dec. 14.
Sooners start `Championship November' on Saturday
It's that time of year again for the Sooners.
Over the years, Oklahoma has started emphasizing how important winning in the month of November is with the name “Championship November,” and it's worked out in the past.
Oklahoma hasn't lost a game in November since 2014, when Baylor beat the Sooners 48- 14 on Nov. 8 in Norman. The November winning streak has helped Oklahoma to four straight Big 12 titles and three College Football Playoff semifinal appearances.
This will be sophomore defensive end Ronnie Perkins' second Championship November, and he's hoping it goes as well for him and the Sooners as his first did.
“I feel like you can probably say it's like the last 200- of the 400meter race before you hit that straightaway and everybody giving it their all,” Perkins said. “We're coming up to that last curve before we hit the straightaway.”
Brkic named semifinalist for Lou Groza Award
Oklahoma kicker Gabe Brkic is a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Thursday.
The award is given annually to the best collegiate place kicker. Brkic is one of 20 semifinalists.
The redshirt freshman was the first Sooner to make four field goals in a game since 2011, when he made all four of his attempts in Oklahoma's loss to Kansas State. Brkic is 10-for-10 on field goals for the season, with a career long of 50 yards.
A panel of FBS coaches, sports information directors, media members, former finalists and NFL kickers will vote to select three finalists. The finalists will be announced Nov. 25. The panel will then vote to choose the winner, which will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Award Show on Dec. 12.
