Museum plans Great Depression photo exhibit
KINGFISHER — The Chisholm Trail Museum will host the exhibit “Photographing the Plains: Farm Security Administration, 1935–1945” from Feb. 1 through May 30.
The traveling exhibit is from the Oklahoma History
Center and highlights a collection of black-andwhite photographs taken by six Farm Security Administration photographers who visited Oklahoma or photographed displaced Oklahomans looking for work during the Great Depression. It is curated by Jim Meeks, curator of exhibits.
Roy Stryker was hired in 1935 to head the Historical Section of the Resettlement Administration and establish a photo documentary project that would provide photographs to public relations outlets.
The Farm Security Administration formed in 1937 under the Agriculture Department and continued the work of photographing rural conditions.
About 175,000 black-andwhite negatives and 1,600 color transparencies were produced.
The Chisholm Trail Museum and A.J. Seay Mansion are at 605 Zellers Ave.
