Landry hangs on to win The American Express

Andrew Land ry re grouped to win The American Express after blowing a six-stroke lead on the back nine Sunday.

Land ry broke a tie with former University of Oklahoma golf er Abraham Ancer with a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole and made a 6- footer on the par- 4 18th for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke victory.

Landy won the pro-am event at PGA West two years after losing a playoff to Jon Rahm. The 32- year-old Texan has two PGA Tour victories, also winning the 2018 Texas Open.

Trying to become the third Mexican winner in P GA Tour history and first since 1978, Ancer matched the Stadium Course record with a 63. Playing two groups ahead of Landry, Ancer birdied the par-516th and the island-green 17 th and parred the 18th.

After missing t he cut in seven of his first eight starts this season, Landry appeared to be cruising to victory when he birdied the first three holes on the back nine to open the six-shot lead. But he bogeyed the next three holes, made a par on the 16th that felt like another bogey, and was tied when Ancer ran in a 25-footer on 17.

Land ry finished at 2 6- under 2 62. For mer Oklahoma State golf er Rickie Fowler, who had a share of the lead after the second round, had a 71 in the final group with Landry and Scottie Scheffler to tie for 10th at 18 under. S chef fl er finished third at 23 under.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Lee Westwood secured his 25 th European Tour win with victory at the A bu D ha bi HS BC Championsh­ip on Sunday.

Westwood, who had a one-shot overnight lead, has now won in four different decades starting int he1990s. The

English man' s 5- under par final- round 67 gave him a two- shot margin over a chasing pack of France's Victor Perez (63) and England' s Tommy Fleet wood (63) and Matthew Fitzpatric­k (67) who all finished on 271.

LP GA TOUR: N as a Hataoka and Gaby Lopez matched par five times in a playoff at the 197-yard 18 th hole until it was too dark to continue on Sunday. They will return

at 8 a.m. Monday at Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, to see who gets the trophy.

LP GA Hall of F amer Inbee Park also was in the playoff, but was eliminated on the third extra hole when her tee shot with a fairway metal caromed off rocks left of the par-3 18th and bounded into surroundin­g water.

ASIAN TOUR: Matt Ku char closed with a 1- under 70 for a threeshot victory over Justin Rose on Sunday in the Singapore Open.

Williams, Osaka win opening matches

Serena Williams won the first set in 19 minutes and had a momentary l apse at the start of the second but completed a 6-0,6-3 win over Anastasia Potapova on day one of the Australian Open.

The eighth-seeded Williams is attempting to win her record 24 th Grand Slam singles title. Defending champion Naomi Osaka won the opening match in Rod Laver Arena, reeling off the last four games after dropping serve for the only time to beat Marie Bouzkova 6-2, 6-4.

Other seeded players advancing included No. 13 Petra Martic and No. 14 Sofia Kenin.
