Going undercover for ice cream
Dippin' Dots boss to appear on popular TV show
“Undercover Boss” fans will recognize a popular product on Wednesday, the ice cream of the future, and may even recognize a local face, as well.
Edmond resident and Dippin' Dots CEO Scott Fischer will make an appearance on the popular CBS television show as one of the featured “undercover” bosses. Fischer will work side-by-side with a franchise location employee, a theme park staff member and both a production and shipping team member at the company's Kentucky manufacturing facility — all while disguising both his physical appearance and the nature of his job.
Fischer said he took the opportunity to appear on the show to examine his company, which he bought out of bankruptcy in 2012, from the inside out.
“It was a great experience,” Fischer said. “It was an experience I would not have done out of the blue.
“I knew we would find some leak sin the boat, so going undercover was great.”
Fischer said the week of undercover work included extremely long days because of heavy makeup work. “We'd usually have about a 20- hour day, and sometimes we wouldn't get back until after midnight,” Fischer said.
The week of filming took Fischer across the country, ending in Kentucky.
To avoid the threat of being discovered, a film crew set up an elaborate backstory to explain the need for camera crews and to throw employees off the scent.
“They put months of preparation into a backstory ,” Fischer said .“When it does come about, there's no expectations.”
Fischer felt he learned some valuable insights through the experience, specifically with the way the company is working from the inside. Some strengths were revealed, but opportunities for growth were identified, as well.
“How fast we are growing, what type of infrastructure we need to support that growth — it was really eye opening to see how much people love our brand ,” Fischer said.
