TENNIS Kenin, Barty advance to Australian Open semifinals

Sofia Kenin's breakthrough run at Grand Slam tournament continues.

The 21- year-old American beat No. 78- ranked Ons Jabeur 6-4,6-4 in the first match Tuesday on Rod Laver Arena to advance into the Australian Open semifinals. It is the first time Kenin has reached the semifinals at a major.

Jabeur, a 25-year-old Tunisian, was the first Arab woman to make it to the last eight at a major.

Kenin will meet topranked Ash Barty in the semi finals, who kept alive her chances of being the first Australian to win her national championship in 42 years. Bar ty beat two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 7- 6 ( 6), 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Bo Pelini returns to LSU as defensive coordinator

Reigning national champion LSU is bringing back Bo P eli ni as defensive coordinator, the position he held when the Tigers won a national championship in the 2007 season.

Peli ni, whose hiring was announced by coach Ed Orgeron on Monday, replaces Dave Aranda, who left the Tigers to take over as Baylor's head coach earlier this month.

Pelini has spent the past five years as head coach at Youngstown State, which he coached to the Football Championship Subdivision national title game in 2016. He also spent seven years as Nebraska's head coach after leaving LSU.

MLB Diamondbacks trade for Starling Marte

The Pittsburgh Pirates sent two-time Gold Glove outfielder and 2016 AllStar Starling Marte to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday for prospects Liover Peguero and pitcher Brennan Malone.

The Diamondbacks will receive $1.5 million from the Pirates on Sept. 15 as part of t he deal, while Pittsburgh obtained $250,000 in international signing bonus allocation.

The 31-year-old Marte is coming off a stellar 2019 in which he hit .295 and set career-highs with 23 home runs and 81 RBIs.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Baylor remains No. 1 in AP Poll

Baylor is No .1 for a second straight week in an AP Top 25 poll that had no major changes at the top, a rare bit of stability in a wildly unpredictable season.

The Bears (17-1) stayed well ahead of No .2 Gonzaga in Monday's poll, part of an unchanged top seven for the first time this season.

The only change in the top 10 came with Villanova moving up a spot to No. 8 to swap positions with No. 9 Duke.

Women: Oregon moved up one spot in The Associated Press women's basketball poll to No. 3 after beating rival Oregon State twice in a 48-hour span.

The Ducks jumped UConn to move behind South Carolina and Baylor in the Top 25 released Monday.

Notre Dame: The Atlantic Coast Conference has fined Notre Dame $20,000 and publicly reprimanded Fighting Irish basketball coach Mike Brey for his comments about offi - ciating after Saturday's loss at Florida State. Brey referenced several issues after the 85-84 loss to the Seminoles, including a technical foul called on the Irish bench with 2:31 left. He also mentioned game official John Gaffney by name as he left the news conference in Tallahassee.
