Jocelyn Fernandez crossed over a defender at the top of the key and made a drive toward the rim. As the help defense approached, she dipped an underhanded pass to J ai den Alexander who scored an easy layup. It was one of her four assists in the fourth quarter as she led Putnam West past Putnam City, 62-34, at PC West Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

“Jocelyn is probably our smartest player,” Putnam West coach Davia Brock said. “She does the right things, she knows our rotations, she moves the ball well, she boxes out, she does everything right. So whenever she attacks, she reads the defense and finds the right person.”

After a close first quarter, that separated the teams by just five points, Putnam West pulled away in the second quarter outscoring Putnam City 17-5. The Pirates never recovered from the quarter as they fell behind big for the remainder of the game.

With the win, Putnam West improves to 10-6 and Putnam City drops to 8-8 on the season.
