Earlier, Federer pulled off the second great escape of his Melbourne campaign by saving seven match points to win 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 7-6 (108), 6-3 against unseeded Tennys Sandgren en route to a record 15th semifinal appearance in the slam.

On the women's side, Wimbledon champion Simona Halep needed only 53 minutes to beat Anett Kontaveit 6-1, 6-1 and seal a place in the Australian Open semifinals for the second time in three years. The No. 28-seeded Kontaveit held the opening game at love, but the 28-year-old Romanian was relentless in an 11-game winning streak that took the match away from her Estonian rival.
