Positive Tomorrows hosts open house at new home this weekend

- Staff reports

Community members can take tours of the new Positive Tomorrows school building during an open-house event Saturday.

The event will start at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting, and t he public can come and go until 2 p.m., according to a news release.

The school is at 901 N Villa. Positive Tomorrows, Oklahoma's only school exclusively serving families and children experiencing homelessness, held t he first classes in its $15 million, 42,000-square-foot facility in December.

After turning away nearly 100 children a year due to space constraints, the new building is expected to host more than 200 students.

“Our families are used to being the ones that are always on the sidelines,” Susan Agel, president and principal of the school, previously told The Oklahoman. “We want to help them realize they don't have to stand on the sidelines for the rest of their lives. … We are so grateful for the community and what they have been able to do for us.”

The school includes a playground, library and gym, donation room for clothes and toiletries, offices for case managers and security features.

The building is also located close to other service providers like Northcare, a behavioral health treatment center, and Remerge, a diversion program for mothers.

It' s estimated there are 9,000 children experiencing some form of homelessness in Oklahoma City, according to the Positive Tomorrows' website.
