Mask production

Wearing a face covering in public is now recommended if you're appearing in a setting where you can't be at least six feet away from someone. That includes places like the grocery store and even an emergency room waiting area. The Centers for Disease Controls says that practice helps to slow the spread of COVID-19.

So employees at Tinker Federal Credit Union decided to help ease the burden on health care workers by delivering 1,000 masks to The Children's Hospital at OU Medicine.

The TFCU employees and volunteers spent countless hours sewing them asks while working from home. They also produced more than 1,600 masks for their own employees who work in area branches and at the corporate office. To date, the credit union has provided over 2,700 masks during the pandemic.

“It felt good to know we were able to have a small impact, no matter how tiny ,” said Dave W ill is,TFCUe xe cutive vice president and chief operations officer. “If we all can make a million tiny gestures, it might make one huge difference. Thank you to all the sewing team and staff that are making this happen.”

Setting the table

ADA — Every Monday evening for the past four years, Mary Huckeby, president of the Ada Board of Realtors, had been helping top repare a nutritious meal at Abba's Table, a nonprofit that serves the homeless, low-income seniors and mentally challenged individuals and their families.

Then the C OVID19 pandemic hit, and Huckeby added Thursday and Friday evenings to help meet new demand. As more people became unemployed in the area, Abba's Table began serving a greater number of guests each night — from 60 a day to about 100 people daily.

Other Realtors took notice. Now Huckeby is joined by Tyler Thompson, Megan Hamel, Doreen McAlister and Pete Benes, who has encouraged other entities and individuals to buy food from local restaurants to help feed guests.

“Our Realtors serve the community regularly in many areas, and during these crazy times, are looking for ways to still help our community,” Huckeby said. She said fellow Realtors decided to help because they “saw that the need to feed people during uncertain and confusing times was still great and even more important than before.”

Speaking of food ...

On Wednesday, Dunkin Donuts honored nurses for their efforts to keep the public healthy and safe from the novel coronavirus.

In honor of National Nurses Day, t he company offered a free hot or iced coffee and donut to Oklahoma City health care workers.
