One could call it shrine cam.

The Arch diocese of Oklahoma City has come up with a way for the faithful to watch the building of the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine being constructed in south Oklahoma City.

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley recently introduced a new live webcam that will show the progress of the $40 million project at SE 89, between Shields Boulevard and Interstate 35. Coakley introduced the webcam during an Assembly of Catholic Professionals' Town Hall meeting via Zoom. The webcam will be live streaming throughout construction.

Catholics from across the state and other supporters gathered in November 2019 f or a groundbreaking ceremony for the shrine named in honor of Rother, an Okarche priest on the path to Catholic sainthood. The project includes the shrine, an educational building and the largest Catholic church in Oklahoma.

"There is a lot of excitement surrounding the building of the shrine and in honoring Blessed Stanley," Diane Clay, the archdiocese's communications director, said Friday.

"While most of the action right now is dirt work, once construction begins, the webcam will provide a front-row seat to watch the shrine's progress every day from anywhere in the world."

Archdiocese leaders have said they expect thousands of people to visit the shrine each year to learn more about Rother, the first U.S.born priest and martyr ever beatified. He was serving as a priest with the Oklahoma City archdiocese when he was killed by unknown assailants in 1981 in his parish rectory in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. He was beatified in a 2017 ceremony in Oklahoma City.
