Construction to start on The Well in Norman

- Staff report

Construction is set to start in July for The Well in Norman, a healthy living block that will bring together a farmers market with physical and wellness resources.

The Well is part of Cleveland County' s five-year master plan and is designed to be a hub for activities and services, including online and in-person fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, a Norman Regional Health System clinic and the Norman Farm Market.

The project, designed by Allford Hall Monagham Morris, will include a greenspace for outdoor events and a two-story community building with 14,000 square feet of classroom and meeting space. The Well will be built by GE Johnson with an opening in 2021. The venue will be located on the 200 block of James Garner Avenue, within walking distance of the Cleveland County Courthouse and downtown Norman.

“Our vision for The Well and the reason we included it in the master plan is to make residents of Cleveland County t he healthiest and happiest they can be,” said Dar ry Stacy, Cleveland

County Commissioner. “The COVID-19 pandemic reminds us that health and continued learning are vital ly important to the well-being of our community and families. The Well will be a healthy destination for individuals, families and communities no matter if they visit in person or from their homes.”

The Well is being promoted as a new concept for Oklahoma, an all-in-one destination where people can shop, learn, play and exercise to improve their health. The operation also will incorporate online education and activities.

“When the community approved the plan for The Well, we traveled the country looking at places that are successful at bringing together health resources, community classes and events that everyone wants to be a part of,” said Melody Bays, executive director of The Well. “And during the C OVID -19 outbreak, we've learned a lot about the different ways people need to access information and connect with their community.”
