McDonald's shooting suspect claimed self-defense

NORMAN—The suspect in a shooting at a McDonald' s in south Oklahoma City confessed after ward and claimed self-defense, police reported.

Gloricia Woody, 32, of Oklahoma City, is charged with three felony counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and one felony count of dischargin­g Woody a weapon.

As urveillanc­e video shows her leaving the restaurant, walking around outside, retrieving a gun from her bag, opening two doors to regain entry and then shooting at the victims as they were walking away, according to a police affidavit.

The shooting May 6 became seen nationwide as a symbol of the tensions surroundin­g the reopening of businesses during the pandemic. Some complain public officials have moved too slow to reopen the economy while others complain they have acted too soon.

Complicati­ng the issue is that many businesses that have reopened, and some that stayed open all along, have limited hours. Police reported Woody got upset after being told t he McDonald's dining area had closed.

Police reported employees had to force her to leave. Police reported she returned with a handgun and fired three rounds. One employee was hit in the arm and two others were injured from shrapnel.

Police arrested Woody walking away from the restaurant and recovered the handgun from her bag, according to the affidavit. She was read her rights at police headquarte­rs and “confessed that she shot at the victims in selfdefens­e,” according to the affidavit.

She was charged Wednesday in Cleveland

County District Court.

Police in December investigat­ed a fight an an Oklahoma City apartment complex involving Woody and an ex-girlfriend but no one wanted to press charges, according to a report. The ex-girlfriend told officers Woody pointed a gun at her head during the fight. Police wrote in the report that Woody did not have a gun “when we made contact with her.”
