Langston University will be suspending athletics for the fall semester due to the coronavirus pandemic
Langston University, the only historically Black university in Oklahoma, announced Friday that it would not participate in any sport during the fall semester due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Athletic director Donnita Rogers wrote in a letter posted on the school' s website that her administration team met with coaches, president Kent Smith Jr. and the school's emergency leadership team Thursday evening and made t he decision not to compete in any fall sport or activity.
The teams not playing during the fall semester include football, volleyball, track and field, and men's and women's basketball. LU's cheer team and band will al so not participate. The school also canceled homecoming festivities.
Assistant football coach Kevin Griffin tweeted :“Tough day already but I know God has a plan already, to make things right. I will never question God' s plans.”
The Lions compete on the NA IA level in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Fellow SAC member Texas College announced Thursday it would also suspend sports in the fall semester.
Rogers said that student- athletes still will be allowed to “participate in skill development sessions, strength and conditioning training and practices which en compass tenor less people and adhere to the recommended CDC guidelines.”
“We are diligently focusing on ideas that will give our student athletes a dynamic experience with the hope that this aggressive measure will put us in the best position to resume sports in the spring,” Rogers said. “I assure you, these Lions will be prepared to hunt again!”
