Top Class of 2021 quarterback's decision looms large

- Ryan Aber, Staff writer

OU's 2021 recruiting class figures to have some fireworks Saturday night.

Caleb Williams, the No. 1 quarterback in the class according to Rivals, will announce his decision at 8 p.m. on CBS Sports HQ, a streaming sports network.

Williams, whose other finalists are LS U and Maryland, is widely expected to commit to the Sooners.

A Williams commitment could start a string of pledges to the Sooners. Four- star wide receiver Jalil Farooq, like Williams a Washington, D. C ., area product, has expressed a desire to play alongside Williams in college.

Latrell McCut chin, a four-star cornerback from Austin, could also be close to pulling the trigger on a commitment to the Sooners. McCutchin had been committed to Alabama for about nine months, before decommitting in March following a visit to Norman.

Riley hoping for national standards on testing

While So one rs coach Lincoln Riley wouldn't pinpoint a specific plan for continued COVID-19 testing Friday, he said OU would continue to test its players regularly.

“We don't want things to creep in here, especially with so many asymptomatic positive across the country right now,” Riley said. “We don't want anything to creep in here that we don't know about.”

Several programs across the country have had to put a stop to workouts after several players tested positive after the teams had begun group work.

Kansas announced Friday that it had halted workouts. Kansas State recently did the same.

While each team is working under their own protocol now, Ril ey s ai d he hoped there would be a more widespread standard as the season draws closer.

“I think we're all hoping that we will lay down some very strict regulations for all college football teams so that we're all on an equal playing field, al l being t est ed t he r i ght way,” Riley said. “I think that has yet to be seen.”

Riley said he was hopeful games like the Sooners' Sept. 5 opener against Missouri State would be able t o be played.

Riley also mentioned a new helmet design, with some type of mask incorporated, could make playing games without virus transmission between teams much easier.
