Jewish center to host second mask distribution
AJewish group's mask giveaway event was so successful that they are holding a second drivethru distribution on Sunday.
The Chabad Community Center for Jewish Life and Learning will distribute free masks from 2 to 3 p.m. at 3000 W Hefner Road.
Rabbi Ovadia Goldman, Chabad's spiritual leader, said members of the public may obtain free masks for themselves and their family members while supplies last.
Goldman said he and his wife, Nechoma, along with volunteers from the Chabad community and the community at large, will distribute the masks.
Village Councilwoman Cathy Cummings and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt joined the rabbi to pass out masks during Chabad's first mask giveaway on July 8.
Masks and face coverings have become part of daily conversation more and more as municipalities and states around the country consider requiring that masks be worn indoors in public places. Close to home, the cities of Norman, Tulsa and Stillwater have approved such mask mandates, and the Oklahoma City Council was set to vote on a mask requirement on Friday. The city of Enid voted down such a measure on Wednesday.
Goldman said Chabad's mask distributions have nothing to do with any mandates or measures and everything to do with health and unity. “We feel a deep responsibility to serve and are determined to help in any way we can, especially
during these challenging times,” he said in a statement. “We are here to give practical assistance and try and help people stay strong through this terrible pandemic.”
He said he grew up in New York, and he and his wife moved to Oklahoma more than 20 years ago. The rabbi said he has embraced what has become known as the “Oklahoma Standard,” and the center's mask outreach is an example of that standard.
The free, reusable 100% cotton masks will be available on a first come, first served basis, and are approved by the Department of Health & Human Services.
