Casady cancels fall sports due to COVID-19 pandemic

T h e S o u t h w e s t Preparator­y Conference, which includes the Casady School, announced Friday night that it is canceling the fall athletic season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SPC said in its statement: "We recognize each of our member schools is under unusual and chall enging circumstan­ces regarding each aspect of school operations.

"We recognize we are members of a Conference wi t h a wi d e v a r i a n c e i n l o c a l c o n d i t i o n s , approaches and opinions regarding how to handle these challengin­g circumstan­ces as they relate to athletic competitio­n.

"We r e c o g n i z e o u r m e m b e r s c h o o l s a r e located in multiple metro areas, spread over a wide geographic ar ea, with varying health conditions, regulation­s, public opinions and government­al recommenda­tions."

BILLS: Cornerback Josh Norman is out indefinite­ly after hurting his left hamstring in practice. Coach Sean McDermott on Friday couldn't provide a timetable on time Norman will miss, saying the team is still determinin­g the severity of the injury. Norman was hurt a day earlier when he appeared to fall awkwardly while being stripped of the ball from behind after i nterceptin­g Josh Allen's pass.

WASHINGTON: Coach Ron Rivera has a form of skin cancer, which the team called “very treatable and curable" because it was discovered at an early stage. A team spokesman confirmed Thursday night Rivera was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. Rivera, 58, is expected to continue coaching for now after consulting with doctors and oncology specialist­s.

Krista Gerlich works fast. After being introduced as the new Texas Tech women's basketball coach the day prior, Gerlich secured her first verbal commitment from Norman High School's Chantae Embry on Thursday.

“It's just so great, and I'm so thankful and blessed,” Embry s a i d by phone Thursday. “My sophomore year, I went through the ACL and meniscus tear. It was tough, but my family helped push me to be the best player I could be.

“I'm just very grateful to be in this position.”

In total, the 6-foot-1 f o r w a r d h e l d o f f e r s from the University of Pennsylvan­ia, Louisiana Tech, LSU, and Colorado, among others. Embry was committed to Oklahoma State at one point.

USAO: Colton Williams was named the Sooner Athletic Conference's 2019-20 male student-athlete of the year on Friday. Williams, a senior left-handed pitcher from Magnolia, Texas, maintained a 4.0 grade-point average and produced a 5-0 record with a 0.61 earned run average with 36 strikeouts in 29.2 innings pitched for Science & Arts of Oklahoma.
