Girl Scouts launches new uniforms

Gi r l Scouts of t he USA and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) this week launched customizab­le, redesigned Girl Scout uniforms that feature a new vest and sash, complement­ed by an official apparel collection of 18 new interchang­eable pieces for girls in grades 6–12.

Girl Scouts has a long history of collaborat­ing with fashion designers, including

Mainbocher i n the 1950s, Halston i n the 1970s, Bill Blass in the 1980s, and Diane von Furstenber­g earlier this year. Now the girls' leadership organizati­on, in collaborat­ion with three FIT Fashion Design students, is reimaginin­g the traditiona­l uniform for older girls.

The new apparel collection created by three FIT students f r om t he Fashion Design class of 2020 — Nidhi Bhasin, J e nny Feng, a nd Melis s a Posner — aim to highlight elements of the classic Girl Scout look while also peppering in modern, fashionabl­e twists to ensure that every girl can express her unique style. Options include cottonblen­d and crewneck T-shirts, full-zip hoodie sweatshirt­s, drawstring joggers, pocketed spandex leggings, cargo pants, a soft knit skater dress, and a light-washed denim jacket in sizes up to 3XL. Amputee fashion show features Paralympic athletes

TOKYO — Paralympic athletes took to the catwalk in Tokyo on Tuesday for the “Amputee Venus Show” which was originally scheduled to be held in conjunctio­n with the opening of the Paralympic Games.

With the Olympics and Paralympic­s postponed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fashion show went ahead anyway.

Several P a r a l y m p i c a t h l e t e s were among the group, including Japan's Kaede Maegawa who f i nished fourth i n the l ong j ump in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic­s.

“Thanks t o t he show i t sank i n t hat t here i s only one year l eft until the Paralympic Games,” Maegawa said. "When I was rehearsing, I felt like I was attending the opening ceremony and almost cried. The show was such a great opportunit­y for me.”

The Paral ympics a r e now scheduled to open on Aug. 24, 2021, and will feature about 4,400 athletes. The Olympics are scheduled to open on July 23, 2021, with 11,000 athletes.

Tokyo organizers have s a i d b o t h e v e n t s wi l l happen, but they have yet to provide details on how athletes will be safe, if fans will be allowed, and who will pick up the bill for the delay. Estimates suggest the cost of delay will be $2 billion to $6 billion with Japanese taxpayers picking up most of the bill.
