After allegedly trying to pass a stolen check and then leading police on a high-speed pursuit through south Oklahoma City on Wednesday, a Norman man told officers his baby was in the back seat the entire time, authorities said.

Just after 5 p.m., police responded to a report of Kody Tyler Hudson, 28, allegedly trying to pass a stolen check for $ 480 in the drive-thru line of First Fidelity Bank at 700 SW 29.

Upon arrival, an officer saw a blue Monte Carlo speeding away from the bank parking lot and swerving through traffic, authorities said. The car reached speeds in excess of 80 mph along south Walker Avenue — during late afternoon traffic — where the speed limit is 40 mph, police said.

Near SW 42 and Walker Avenue, the car lost control, knocked over a stop sign, slid through a yard and entered the road again along westbound SW 42.

At this point, police said, the Monte Carlo's front driver-side tire was blown and falling off the rim. The Monte Carlo traveled westbound on SW 42 to a dead end, where the vehicle turned around, fish- tailed and rear-ended a parked car.

Hudson, who was driving the Monte Carlo, tried to back up and ram the police car, authorities said.

Officers held Hudson at gunpoint and commanded him to comply with orders, police said. Hudson got out of the Monte Carlo and approached one officer, who had his weapon drawn, but other officers were able to subdue him, police said.

In handcuffs, Hudson told officers his baby was in the back seat of the Monte Carlo, police said.

Police observed a baby in the back seat. Authorities said the baby was unharmed. The state Department of Human Services was notified, police said.

Hudson was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on complaints of child neglect and endangering others while eluding a police officer.
