`Batman Day' on calendar despite virus

- Matt Price

Despite the coronavirus shutting down production of “The Batman” film, the Caped Crusader isn't letting the pandemic take him out completely.

Warner Bros. plans to still hold “Batman Day” on Saturday, though this year's events are more virtual than previous years.

Fans can register for a “Virtual Batman Run” at https://dcbatmanrun.com/ to run a 5K or 10K over the weekend. The Batman Virtual 10K/5K will support the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

“Caped Crusader Training” is set for BatmanDay.com, where fans can find activities including DIY cape and cowl instructions, a how-to video

about creating your own BatSignal, and other activities.

For the younger readers, BatmanDay.com also will offer free activity kits to print at home. More activities and tie-ins can be found at BatmanDay.com.

If you are getting out to your local comic shop, it's a good week to celebrate Batman Day there, as well. Though there are no new comic-shop-specific giveaways, the new release “Detective Comics” #1027, on sale this week, celebrates 1,000 issues since

Batman's first appearance in “Detective Comics” #27 in 1939.

The lead story will take readers back to 1939 in a story written by Dan Jurgens, with layouts and finished art by Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan.

According to DC, “Generations: Fractured” pits Batman against a would-be gang of museum vandals, led by Calendar Man. As the Dark Knight tries to stop him from torching priceless artifacts, a mysterious flash of light appears to break reality, and Batman finds that everything

is different in Gotham, as he's transported back to 1939.

Meanwhile, Eisner awardwinning writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Dan Mora team up to tell a tie-in story to “The Joker War,” the story raging across the main Batman line of books.

The 144-page issue, which will retail for $9.99, will feature creators, including Grant

Morrison, Greg Rucka, Tom King, Brian Michael Bendis, Marv Wolfman, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson and more.
